The Importance of Self-care

Last year was so impactful in so many ways, and one of the pearls to arise from the grit required to ride out those storms has been our renewed focus on wellness. Wellness is vital to not just surviving but thriving, and we believe personal wellness is the foundation that allows us to be the change we want to see in the world.

Wellness can mean a number of different things: the state of one’s physical self, the health of your spiritual self, and the status of your creative center.

Self-care is an important part of any wellness regimen, whether that’s a yoga class and guided meditation or eating ice cream straight from the pint with a spoon while standing in the freezer (we’ve done both in the last year; this is a judgment-free zone).

Today we’re taking a moment to focus on self-care. We’re delving into what it means to center yourself in wellness and the different forms that can take, and we’re excited to share some of our favorite ways to recharge and indulge.

What is self-care?

Self-care is the mindful exercise of taking care of yourself, examining your needs, and leaning into practices that sustain you and provide a restful, healing space.

While self-care may lead to self-improvement, it’s also important not to confuse the two. Self-improvement often stems from a perfectionist mindset, but “self-care is different because it’s about allowing yourself to have a nurturing experience of life right now,” according to self-care coach Gracy Obuchowicz.

Self-care Sunday

We love the idea of picking one day of the week to celebrate and nurture you. The hustle and bustle of modern life can leave everyone feeling spread thin, struggling to multitask, and pulled in 15 different directions at once. Too often, at the end of the day, the unchecked item on your to-do list is, well, you.

Self-care Sunday has a playful ring to it, but frankly, the objective is simply to start a consistent, regular self-care routine. Maybe that means setting aside an entire day each week to relax, unwind, and reconnect, or maybe for you, that means reserving an hour for meditation, a pampering bath, or enjoying a sage smudge stick while reading an inspirational book. Sunday is a popular day for self-care to recharge before the workweek, and the “when” is less important than that you make time for yourself.

Some of our favorite ways to indulge in some much-needed self-care are yoga, meditation, tea, and reconnecting with nature, but it’s hard to go wrong with a luxurious candlelit bath, some lavender mist and an evening gratitude journaling, or a long walk on the beach.

If you’re not sure where to start, join us with your loved ones for a transformational, creative Mala Workshop. We open the morning with a guided invocation and set our intentions before teaching you how to make your own Mala Mantra Necklace, a powerful meditation tool.
